Saturday evening, right after the post-race of a beautiful Sanremo, we reported the accident involving Martin Svrcek, a young Czech cyclist from Soudal Quick-Step, who fell during the Cipressa descent suffering multiple fractures.
Yesterday, Jurgen Foré, CEO of Soudal Quick-Step, returned to the topic by writing an open letter and raising the alarm about race safety: "Martin fell on the Cipressa descent while trying to rejoin the group. In a technical curve, he went beyond the guardrail and fell about three meters. He was completely alone and there were no cars nearby that saw him. Fortunately, he was conscious and called for help through the team's radio. Our technicians immediately had the reflex to stop the team car and walk back: after 500 meters they found him and were able to treat him".
Foré's analysis continues: "I don't want to point fingers at the organization. It was an accident that occurred due to several factors. But I cannot remain silent either. Of course, it's a race accident, but we must do better to prevent such incidents in the future".
According to Foré, there is a solution: "We have the technology, let's use it. Earpieces are a fundamental source of information for cyclists because they allow them to ask for help".
Foré is clear that there is still much work to be done: "After three months of the season, our team has three riders who will be out for months. That's why I want to emphasize again the serious consequences of every fall. This time, "fortunately" it was just broken bones, but other times it's about broken dreams and careers".
Foré's speech immediately brought to mind the accident of young Swiss rider Muriel Furrer, who lost her life falling off-road during the junior girls' race at the 2024 World Championships in Zurich, because that day Muriel did not have a radio.
But now we are waiting for Foré - and not just him - to take a stand on yesterday's Brugge-De Panne, we await their intervention against an unacceptable final route in which chain crashes occurred and precisely a Soudal Quick Step rider - European champion Tim Merlier - risks having his Northern campaign compromised due to a deep wound.
Svrcek's fall at Sanremo is part of the unpredictable events of a race, yesterday's half-group crash at De Panne is not. It's not a matter of provincialism or national flag, safety has no colors or symbols, safety must be guaranteed. To everyone and everywhere.
