The Transparency Hall of the Liguria Region hosted today the official presentation of the 62nd Trofeo Laigueglia, the opening classic of the Italian cycling calendar, scheduled for next March 5th. The event, which boasts a prestigious history, represents one of the most anticipated appointments in the international cycling panorama and is organized by the Municipality of Laigueglia with the technical direction of the Emilia Sports Group.
The presentation was attended by the Mayor of Laigueglia Giorgio Manfredi, Regional Councilor Simona Ferro, Emilia Sports Group President Adriano Amici and, via telephone connection, Roberto Pella, President of the Professional Cycling League who highlighted the extensive international television coverage. The race, which will see the participation of 175 riders, is part of the Liguria Region Challenge, together with the Giro dell'Appennino, consolidating the link between sport and territory and is valid as the first test of the Regions Cup, the new ranking created by the Professional Cycling League of the Italian Cycling Federation.
During the presentation, initiatives related to the event were also illustrated, and the first "La Fuga" prize was presented, a work by Laigueglia sculptor Giovanni Madianiti. In the early afternoon, during the race, on Via Mazzini - the location of the start and awards - a conference promoted by Novo Nordisk will be held, a Danish pharmaceutical multinational that sponsors an American team composed of athletes with diabetes. The main diabetologists from Liguria and Mayor Giorgio Manfredi will participate in the debate.
Additionally, among the side events, there will also be a drawing contest dedicated to schoolchildren.
Giorgio Manfredi, Mayor of Laigueglia: "More than 60 years have passed since the first edition, the world has changed, tourism offerings and marketing have adapted to changing needs and new social contexts. The sport-tourism combination is still attractive and effective today, and the Trofeo Laigueglia is now more than ever an integral part of the tourist image of the maritime village and Liguria. Its route enhances the uniqueness and beauty of the territory."
Simona Ferro, Sports Councilor of Liguria Region: "The Trofeo Laigueglia reaches its 62nd edition and Liguria Region, which sponsors and promotes the event, can only enthusiastically greet a historic event for the world of cycling - comments the Sports Councilor of Liguria Region Simona Ferro. - In the year we are the European Region of Sport, an international-level initiative like the Trofeo Laigueglia, with some of the most renowned and prestigious teams in the world cycling panorama, allows us to showcase some of the most fascinating places of our beautiful territory worldwide."
Adriano Amici, GS Emilia President: "For GS Emilia, it is a true pleasure and honor to return to Laigueglia, an appointment that enhances the tradition and prestige of our cycling. We thank the municipal administration for their trust and collaboration. The route promises to be engaging and will offer great spectacle, with teams ready to battle and many young talents to keep an eye on."
In the coming days, the main registered participants will be announced
THE ROUTE
The Trofeo Laigueglia route reprises the scheme of the most recent editions. After an initial hilly section and two Mountain Grand Prix - Cima Paravenna and Testico - the race will come alive with the final circuit, to be repeated four times. The climb of Colla Micheri (2 km at 8.4% with peaks at 14%), interspersed with the Capo Mele climb, will be the focal point of selection. The last 40 km, without respite, promise show and battle among the protagonists.
The finish is expected in Via Roma in Laigueglia, with a final straight that will allow an exciting epilogue after a selective race.
