For Soudal-Quick Step, the Liège-Bastogne-Liège is a race that matters and for Remco Evenepoel it is the most important Classic of the year, not only because he has already won twice, but because the course of the Doyenne is the most beautiful for him.
Soudal-Quick Step has carefully studied the team that will be with Evenepoel on Sunday, with the intention of conquering the third Liège-Bastogne-Liège. With Remco will be Gil Gelders, Pieter Serry, Mauri Vansevenant, Ilan Van Wilder, Louis Vervaeke and the German Maximilian Schachmann, third in Liège in 2019.
"We have countless memories of this race and hope to create more on Sunday, but we know it will be difficult, because we are talking about a Monument Classic with a challenging course" - explained sports director Klaas Lodewyck - The team we have chosen is very strong. Everyone arrives with great motivation and high morale after recent results in the Ardennes. This gives us great confidence".
The Liège-Bastogne-Liège is the fourth and final Monument Classic of the Spring and is also the last race of the Ardennes. Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel will seek his third victory, just like his main rival Tadej Pogacar, winner in 2021 and 2024.
Evenepoel started his season at the Brabant Arrow, where he immediately secured victory, then at the Amstel Gold Race he finished third behind Pogacar and Skjelmose, while at the Flèche Wallonne, due to the cold, he finished ninth.
"I can say that I had excellent sensations, I had fantastic legs - explained Remco Evenepoel - I felt great until the circuit. My only mistake was taking off my rain jacket a bit too early. I warmed up a bit on the first pass on the Huy wall and decided to remove it. But afterwards, I started to get cold. I paid dearly for this mistake on the last climb. I felt it in my legs. With the cold, my muscles were not performing well".
Meanwhile, Remco is ready for Sunday and is also very satisfied with the team. "Despite suffering on the last climb, I'm happy with what I did at the Arrow and I'm happy with my teammates who did an excellent job. Regarding Liège, I'm confident, the sensations are positive and I can't wait to race".
