A victory at the last breath! Paul Double from Jayco AlUla attacks at the end of the Riccione / Sogliano al Rubicone stage, the second stage of the Coppi&Bartali Week, reaches and passes young Lennart Jasch - who was leading until that moment - then resists the return of the best group and thus conquers, in one fell swoop, his first career victory and the race leader's jersey. Behind him, young Belgian Jarno Widar from Lotto and Diego Ulissi from XdS Astana, last year's winner on this finish line and today's third-place finisher, cross the line.
THE RACE. Starting from Scacciano without young Gauthier Servranckx (Soudal Quick-Step), forced to withdraw due to influenza, the cyclists rode compactly for seven kilometers before four riders attacked: Panamanian Carlos Samudio (Team Solution Tech - Vini Fantini), Frenchman Mathieu Burgaudeau (Team TotalEnergies), Spaniard Marc Cabedo (JCL Team UKYO) and Austrian Dominik Amann (Team Vorarlberg). The breakaway quickly gained a 4-minute advantage over the group controlled by Ineos.
Shortly after crossing the state border, climbing towards the heart of San Marino, Amann - who was already in the breakaway yesterday - lost the wheels of his adventure companions while a slide gave Samudio a few chills down his spine, though he was clever enough to get back in the saddle and then back to the head of the race with Burgaudeau and Cabedo.
At the foot of the San Leo climb, the peloton caught Amann while the three leaders were reported with a 1'50" advantage; at the first mountain grand prix of the day, Cabedo anticipated Samudio and Burgaudeau. Approaching the Sogliano al Rubicone circuit, the forcing of UAE Team Emirates - XRG significantly reduced the gap between the group and the breakaway, and at the same time Ewan was reported to be in difficulty.
At the ninetieth kilometer of the race, Carlos Samudio could no longer keep up with his breakaway companions and was quickly caught first by Lorenzo Finn and then by the group, which put an end to his action shortly after the second mountain grand prix of the stage (won by Cabedo).
At the hundredth kilometer of the race, the group came back together, but a handful of kilometers later, Gabriele Raccagni (Team Polti VisitMalta), Baptiste Vadic (Team TotalEnergies) and Leander Van Hautegem (Wagner Bazin WB) increased the pace, escaping the group's control. Among attacks and counterattacks, it was then Walter Calzoni's turn, who cleverly reached Van Hautegem just before the third mountain grand prix of the day.
32 kilometers from the finish, with a descent attack, Kim Heiduk (INEOS Grenadiers), Pascal Eenkhoorn (Soudal Quick-Step), Thomas Pesenti (Soudal Quick-Step), Rafał Majka (UAE Team Emirates - XRG) tried to escape, but their action did not yield the desired results and the group returned compact once again.
At the sound of the bell, coinciding with the last mountain grand prix of the day, Paul Double took the head of the group and anticipated Magnus Sheffield and Rafał Majka, taking important points for the climbers' classification.
On the descent that followed, 14 kilometers from the finish, Lennart Jasch (Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe Rookies) increased the pace and took several seconds of advantage that, however, were not enough to resist Double's vehement return who caught and passed him two kilometers from the finish, launching himself towards victory.
