It happened again, on the roads of Etoile de Besseges. Shortly after the start of the third stage, approaching a roundabout, the riders suddenly found a vehicle coming in the opposite direction. And then other cars on the course, which led to the decision to stop.
Long discussions with the jury president and the race director, three rider representatives were called to vote and two expressed an opinion against restarting.
The organizers' proposal was to restart the stage after descending the Col des Brousses and award the victory to the first rider crossing the finish line in Besseges. The solution did not sit well with Soudal Quick-Step, Unibet Tietema Rockets, Ineos Grenadiers, Red Bull-BORA-Hansgrohe, Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale Team, EF Education-EasyPost and Uno-X Mobility, who decided to stop and not continue the race.
The official start was finally given at km 22 after an hour of stop and discussions.
Soudal Quick Step posted the following message: "Our team is one of many that have decided to withdraw from today's #EDB25 stage due to several incidents with vehicles on the race course. We consider this unacceptable and have decided not to return to the stage as we prioritize the safety of our riders and staff" and other stopped teams are expressing themselves along the same lines.
