The fourth victory for the Florence-based Hopplà team and the second win for Catanian Alfio Andrea Bruno in the race from Maremma to the heart of Chianti. The team directed by Stefano Roncalli and owned by Claudio Lastrucci doesn't miss a beat, launching Bruno in the last kilometer of a final climb just under three kilometers long, with two sections at 15 percent and an average gradient of 9.20%. Bruno, recently victorious in a solo breakaway at the Coppa Martiri Montemaggio in San Gimignano, and Valdarna's Regnanti once again brilliant and well-positioned, awaiting an inevitable success. The most dangerous opponent was the young Abruzzese Masciarelli, who tried to counter Bruno's final and decisive acceleration, crossing the finish line with a one-second margin in a scattered and fragmented arrival. The race started from Fattoria Rocca di Montemassi in the municipality of Roccastrada in the province of Grosseto, concluding in the heart of Chianti at Castello di Albola near Radda in Chianti. This was the fourth edition, and for the first time, an athlete from a Tuscan team won, flying in the first part of the season thanks to the team spirit and collective effort created by the managers, sponsors, and sports director Stefano Roncalli.
At stake for this perfectly organized spring race by the Pol. Tripetetolo Seanese of president Sonia Ceccarelli, Masiani, and Biancolini, was also the Fabrizio Fabbri Memorial, a great champion of Tuscan cycling and later an appreciated sports director of the Mapei team. This was the first test of the special Challenge, with the other two being next Monday in Mercatale Valdarno and on August 30th the Coppa Comune di Lastra a Signa. 141 riders from 26 teams were at the start, with Italian U23 National Team Coach Marino Amadori present. In the first fragmented part of ups and downs, many retirements occurred, with the first real breakaway happening 50 km from the finish, featuring Harding and Burani. On the climb towards Castellina in Chianti, the Englishman dropped out, while Burani was caught by a group of about thirty riders 6 km from the finish. Along the final climb, the leading group thinned out turn after turn, with Bruno, Masciarelli, and Regnanti proving to be the strongest, finishing in that order.
