The Tour of Hellas resumed its journey after yesterday's terrible stage was canceled due to winter cold and rain. Today, in the fourth sunny stage that took riders from Chalkida to Athens, French rider Adrien Maire (Unibet Tietema Rockets) emerged victorious, outsprinting Diego Ulissi (XDS Astana Team) who finished second, with Harold Lopez third, maintaining his overall lead. An impressive fifth place went to the generous Carboni, who worked in support of his teammate Maire in the final sprint.
RACE REPORT
An lively and hard-fought stage that saw the overall contenders involved in the decisive break. Along with the race leader Harold Lopez (XDS Astana Team), his teammate Ulissi, Bax, Camprubi, Vanhoucke, the spirited Carboni, Maire, Schiffer, Zoidl, Peter, and Stussi broke away. The group maintained their lead despite a courageous comeback attempt by Hepburn, Stewart, Eiking, Kyffin, Budzinski, Monti, Bak, Pridal, Kaczmarek, Marchand, and Kelley, who ultimately failed to catch them. On the Agios Merkourios climb (3.4km at 7.8%), Ulissi, Carboni, Maire, Schiffer, Camprubi, and race leader Lopez broke away from the front group. Climbing towards the mountain prime, Lopez and Schiffer pulled ahead of their former breakaway companions. On the descent, Schiffer crashed, and Carboni rejoined Lopez. With seven kilometers to go, Ulissi, Schiffer, and Maire caught up with the leading pair. The quintet raced to the finish line, where Maire took the sprint victory while Lopez maintained his overall lead.
