Among the 175 cyclists who will be at the starting line tomorrow, 6 have already won the Milan-Sanremo in their career: the German Degenkolb in 2015, the Frenchman Alaphilippe in 2019, the Belgians Stuyven and Philipsen respectively in 2021 and 2024, the Slovenian Mohoric in 2022 and the Dutchman Van der Poel in 2023. Among the winners of the last 6 editions, Van Aert, who won in 2020, is practically the only one missing.
Overall, 11 riders at the start have already been on the podium of the Classicissima, including Ben Swift, Michael Matthews, Oliver Naesen, Filippo Ganna, and Tadej Pogacar. The Slovenian superstar is the active cyclist who has won the most Monument Classics (7 compared to Van der Poel's 6) and in case of triumph would achieve two absolutely prestigious results:
- Become the fifth to win the Classicissima in the world champion jersey, a feat accomplished in history only by Italians Alfredo Binda in 1931, Felice Gimondi in 1974, Giuseppe Saronni in 1983, and twice by the Belgian Eddy Merckx, in 1972 and 1975
- Become the tenth ever to win four of the five Monument Classics, after triumphing in the Tour of Flanders, Liège-Bastogne-Liège, and Il Lombardy.
Barring last-minute changes, there will be only 31 Italians at the Milan-Sanremo 2025, 15 fewer than last year. This is the negative record since the world cycling was reformed in 2005, although our nation will still be the most represented. Among the Azzurri at the start in this edition, only Jonathan Milan and Filippo Ganna have already achieved victories this season. Italian riders have won the Sanremo 51 times, the last being Vincenzo Nibali in 2018.
