A quiet Saturday afternoon, one of the first races of the season for amateurs: in Cerea, in the province of Verona, the 26th edition of the "Ristorante da Aldo - 16th Memorial Antonio De Carli" trophy is being held when an incredible incident puts the riders' lives at risk and forces the organizers to cancel the event, which had about 250 registered participants.
It was just past 1 pm when a pedestrian invaded the roadway as the cyclists were passing through and caused a crash: witnesses reported that the pedestrian, a foreign man in an evident state of drunkenness and holding a bottle of a strong alcoholic drink, was walking unsteadily on the road, ignoring warnings to move aside. Despite the calls, he entered the roadway just as a group of cyclists was approaching. Some riders managed to avoid him at the last moment, but others were not as quick. Three cyclists fell heavily on the asphalt: among them, the most seriously injured was T.M., 65 years old, from Castelfranco Emilia, Modena, who suffered a serious facial trauma following the fall. The other two only sustained abrasions and bruises, but the 65-year-old's situation appeared more serious from the start. Rescue was immediately dispatched while the organizers stopped the man and held him until the arrival of law enforcement.
The injured cyclist was stabilized and taken to Borgo Trento hospital, where he is currently hospitalized. The pedestrian was taken into custody by the officers and subjected to routine checks, including a breathalyzer test.
