It had been since the second time trial of the 2023 Tour de l'Avenir that Davide Piganzoli had not finished among the top three in an individual time trial. The young Italian prospect achieved this at the O Gran Camiño 2025, recording a time of 23'34", which only Derek Gee was able to beat, thus taking away his personal success.
Despite this, the performance in the stage ending in Pereiro de Aguiar can only make the Valtellina native and his team smile, who are called upon in the next two stages to confirm, and possibly improve, their current third place in the general classification behind the Canadian.
This mission will begin tomorrow in A Pobra do Brollón-O Cebreiro, a stage with plenty of climbing at the end that could highlight the qualities of a Piganzoli who appeared decidedly reinvigorated by today's performance against the clock.
"I think I did a good time trial with some good values," he said after crossing the line.
"I've had a week where I struggled to train at home a bit because of the cold and because I hadn't recovered from the retreat and efforts of the Valenciana. So the sensations are good, I'd say this is an excellent step towards Tirreno," continued "Piga" before analyzing the time trial in more detail.
"The course was divided into three parts: the first, with the climb, where you had to try to go fast but not all out to avoid losing energy later, the second with a flat section where you had to maintain the rhythm, and then the tricky finale with several curves where it was important not to crash. Tomorrow? It will be a tough stage where we might try to attack," concluded the 22-year-old from Polti-VisitMalta, now 17 seconds behind Gee in the general classification.
