A night without Italian medals at the third day of the European Championships in Heusden-Zolder. A touch of disappointment for Chiara Consonni who had given hope in the omnium tournament after rising to third position at the end of the elimination: in the points race, the rider from Bergamo was unable to make an impact and finished sixth overall in a race won by Lorena Wiebes. The phenomenal Dutch rider was both skilled and lucky: two laps from the end, the British rider Leech, who was leading the standings, slipped, and Wiebes understood that by winning the last sprint she would catch up with her rival, overtaking her thanks to a better placement in the final sprint. Bronze medal for Danish rider Amelie Dideriksen.
WOMEN'S SPRINT. No luck for Miriam Vece: the Italian was beaten 2-0 by British rider Edmunds in the semifinal and then lost to Alina Lisenko (Independent Athletes) in the bronze medal match. An exciting final for gold between British Rhian Edmunds and independent athlete Yana Burlakova: Edmunds surprised her rival in the first heat, Burlakova chose the standstill, forcing her opponent to repeat the heat with reversed positions and then beat her on the comeback. Finally, after just ten minutes, the decisive heat saw Burlakova's victory by photo finish.
MEN'S PURSUIT. Applause-worthy performance by nineteen-year-old Italian Renato Favero who made life difficult for British rider Josh Gill in the bronze medal final, with Gill only prevailing in the last kilometer thanks to his experience. The title went to the other British rider, twenty-two-year-old Josh Charlton (4.02.882 his time) who beat Portuguese rider Ivo Oliveira (4.03.631).
MEN'S SCRATCH. As yesterday in the points race, Portuguese Iuri Leitao dominated, imposing his law and conquering another European title. Silver for Dutch rider Hoppezak and bronze for British William Tidball. Thirteenth place for eighteen-year-old Friulian Davide Stella, at his debut in an elite international event.
