The cycling world wants to make its voice heard, in the name of respectful coexistence, with the goal of everyone traveling safely and getting back "On the right road", with particular attention to the most vulnerable users. The growing number of accidents and recent deaths of young cyclists, killed by motor vehicle drivers, are clear proof that the issue of road safety can no longer be ignored.
This is why the Trentino Committee of the Italian Cycling Federation, also urged by the societies representing the movement, and Fiab Trento Bicycle Friends have promoted an initiative titled "On the Right Road", a campaign and demonstration against road violence which other entities and associations have promptly joined, such as I Respect the Cyclist, Uisp, Legambiente (Trento Chapter), Tridentum Bike, Trentino Climate Network and Ciclostile.
The demonstration will be held in Trento on Saturday, March 15th, with gathering at 3 PM in Duomo Square. From there, participants will cycle through the city streets, then reach Fiera Square, where representatives from the entities and associations will deliver speeches after signing an important document addressed to the political world, immediately requesting speed controls and respect for the 1.5-meter distance from cyclists, spreading "bike lanes" on provincial roads, adopting signage for safe distance from cyclists, and a provincial road and cycle path maintenance plan.
The high mortality rate on roads requires concrete actions. Among the actions requested from the Autonomous Province of Trento and local municipalities are also adopting a Provincial Cycling Mobility Plan, to be promoted through inter-municipal tables, extending 30 km/h zones in urban contexts, communicating and incentivizing sustainable mobility, opening a discussion table with local driving schools for greater awareness, promoting sustainable mobility and road safety education projects in schools of all levels, and ultimately creating safe cycling infrastructures, such as the cycling track in the Trento area and other protected circuits in the valleys.
The initiative has gathered support from many Trentino professionals and former professionals, such as Gianni Moscon, Nicola Conci, Mattia and Davide Bais, Letizia and Giada Borghesi, Alan Marangoni, Gilberto Simoni and Maurizio Fondriest, the latter personally committed with the I Respect the Cyclist association.
