The memory of two lives cut short by tragedy, one three months ago and the other eight years ago, who are symbols of all lives lost in road accidents, with cyclists being the most vulnerable road users.
Tour of the Alps paid tribute this morning to Sara Piffer and Michele Scarponi: civil authorities, top leaders of Italian cycling, organizers, athletes, and fans gathered in a moment of reflection that transformed into a message that must reach everyone, asking for mutual "respect" from all road users who have the right, among others, to return home. Sara's mother Marianna was present, with her husband Lorenzo and Sara's three brothers Christian, Gabriele, and Loris (the Piffer family is legally represented by lawyer Federico Balconi from Zerosbatti). "We have a duty to do something for others, as Sara would have wanted, as Sara did. Our message is not one of pain, but of hope, goodness, and love," said mother Marianna.
Marco Scarponi also took part in the ceremony, on the eighth anniversary of the unforgettable Michele's passing. With him were the top authorities of Trentino, the President of the Autonomous Province of Trento Maurizio Fugatti and Vice President Francesca Gerosa, the President of the Italian Cycling Federation Cordiano Dagnoni, the President of the Professional Cycling League Roberto Pella, and the number 1 of FCI Trentino Renato Beber.
And the group, after just one kilometer of racing, slowed down passing in front of the plaque commemorating Sara Piffer, paying further tribute to a girl who dreamed of flying far away on her bicycle.
