
Since 2021, he has been the Technical Commissioner of the Italian Male Junior National Team, last year he led Lorenzo Finn to the world title in Zurich, and just over a month ago he was appointed responsible for the entire male track movement. Edoardo Dino Salvoldi has a packed schedule, but on the sidelines of the Gran Premio del Perdono di Melegnano presentation, he spoke with tuttobiciweb.
Salvoldi, let's start with the young talents. What has caught your attention in this early part of 2025 for the Juniors?
"The category's season has been ongoing for almost a month. So far, there have been more confirmations than novelties, but some athletes, especially those in their first year, have already distinguished themselves. The level of Italian cycling in this category is very good".
2024 was an important and successful year. What are your hopes for this season?
"The goal is to confirm ourselves at the levels of last year, with the prospect of achieving something important in 2025 as well".
Let's talk about the calendar. What will be the key events besides the titled competitions?
"With the Gran Premio del Perdono di Melegnano (April 21, ed.) a week of truly high-quality races in Italy begins. Subsequently, we will participate with the national team in the Peace Race in the Czech Republic (May 8-11, 2025, ed.). Then the traditional events under the National Team's purview, regarding the road, are all placed at the end of the season: the World Championships in the last week of September in Rwanda and the European Championships in France following (October 1-5, ed.). For track events, we'll have the European Championships in Portugal in July (15-20, ed.) and the World Championships in the Netherlands at the end of August".
The World Championships in Rwanda is a much-discussed topic. How will you prepare for the event?
"First of all, we are waiting for official confirmation, although the latest information seems to confirm that the world championships will indeed take place in Africa. The course will be unique, with an elevation change not seen in a world championship in recent years. It will be raced at 1500 meters above sea level, with temperatures that should not be very high but rather similar to European temperatures for that period. We will also need to address non-secondary issues such as health, organization, and travel. But there is an entire race calendar and a path that will lead us in September to evaluate the most suitable team to bring to such a challenging course".
After road racing, let's move to the track and take a look at the higher categories. What can we expect from the "older" athletes?
"More than expecting something, I ask for patience because there are two projects running in parallel. One concerns the 'rebuilding' of a group that has given so much in the last two quadrennial periods and which at the moment, from my point of view rightly, prefers to focus more on road racing; the other sees the young talents who have done well in the Junior category, obtaining important results and highlighting potential that we must discover among the élite. To do this, it will take time, application, and continuity. The goal is to arrive in about 3 years at unifying the two projects by combining the young talents who will emerge with the champions who will return for the Olympic appointment. It won't be simple, and we already know it won't be for everyone. We'll need a reassessment at the end of the next two seasons to understand what the prospects might be".
