Tomorrow will be the big day of the Tour of Flanders, the 109th edition of a story that began in 1913 with the victory of Belgian Paul Deman. The two super favorites for the final success are Mathieu Van der Poel and Tadej Pogacar. The Dutchman and the Slovenian have so far won 7 Monument Classics in their careers and are tied as the best currently active cyclists (ranked seventh in the all-time list). At stake is primarily the sole leadership.
Van der Poel is one of the seven cyclists leading the all-time ranking of the Ronde Van Vlaanderen and if successful would be the first to achieve four triumphs, thus becoming the best of all time in this race. The Dutchman would be the second in history to win both Milan-Sanremo and the Tour of Flanders in the same year, a feat so far only achieved by Belgian Eddy Merckx in 1969 and 1975, but also the first to complete a triple of Sanremo, E3 Harelbeke, and Flanders in a single season.
Here are some statistical curiosities in case of success for other big names racing tomorrow:
- Slovenian Pogacar would be the seventh ever to win the Flanders in the world champion jersey
- Danish Pedersen would become the sixth to win both Gent-Wevelgem and Tour of Flanders in the same year
- American Powless would be the sixth to sign the double with Dwars door Vlaanderen
- Belgian Van Aert would break the longest drought ever for his nation in this race (7 years since Gilbert's triumph in 2017)
- Italian Ganna would allow Italy to celebrate its twelfth victory ever
