As expected, the team time trial of Paris-Nice went to Visma – Lease a Bike and now Matteo Jorgenson and Jonas Vingegaard sit in first and second place in the general classification. Tim Merlier, who was wearing the yellow leader's jersey yesterday, was forced to surrender it to his rivals. Today's team time trial was textbook, where the Dutch team immediately demonstrated their supremacy.
"The plan was to climb with four riders at full throttle" - explained Jorgenson, who now wears the yellow jersey - "Then it was just about taking the final curves as quickly as possible towards the last kilometer".
For several years, Paris-Nice has introduced a new regulation for the team time trial: for stage victory and general classification, the time of the fourth rider no longer counts, but the times of individual riders. Jorgenson, together with Jonas Vingegaard, were the only ones left from the Visma-Lease a Bike train and improved the best time by 14 seconds over Jayco-AlUla. "I am very proud of what happened today. It's not a given that six guys work so hard for me. Now I can wear the yellow jersey for the first time. Last time I got it at the end of the final stage, I never wore it during the race. This year we will finally have to defend the yellow jersey for several stages and I'm sure we have the team to do it".
Jonas Vingegaard crossed the finish line in second place and is also second in the general classification. The Dane, who is used to wearing the sole captain's role, is sharing the team leadership with Jorgenson in this Paris-Nice. "It was a perfect day. We showed we are incredibly strong. My physical form is also quite good, I feel stronger every day. My first day in Algarve wasn't the best, but I still managed to move forward. Now Matteo is first and I am second in the general classification, and we will try to maintain these positions".
Tomorrow, Paris-Nice will continue with the fourth stage, and riders will face 163.4 km of hilly terrain between Vichy and La Loge des Gardes. The finale will be characterized by a 6.7 km climb with an average gradient of 7.1%. There will also be five other climbs before reaching the final first-category climb.
