Jonathan Milan doesn't miss and signs a masterpiece sprint in the second stage of Tirreno-Adriatico, the Camaiore-Follonica 192 km route. The Lidl Trek train worked perfectly launching the Friulian giant on the final straight, practically winning by a significant margin and great celebration after the finish line with teammates and staff.
Behind Milan, the Dutch rider Zijlaard from Tudor, French rider Penhoet from Groupama FDJ, Dutch rider Kooij from Visma Lease a Bike and Simone Consonni, today the perfect lead-out for Jonathan Milan. Tenth place for Enrico Zanoncello from VF Bardiani CSF Faizané.
In the general classification, Filippo Ganna remains in command, winner of yesterday's inaugural time trial.
THE RACE. Right from the start, Manuele Tarozzi went off alone: probably the VF Group Bardiani CSF Faizané rider would have preferred to have some adventure companions, but that wasn't the case, so off he went, head down and pedaling.
Just before the Canneto climb, the only GPM of the day, Davide Bais and Alessandro Tonelli - both from Polti VisitMalta - broke away from the group to catch up with Tarozzi and with Bais conquering the first green jersey of the Race of the Two Seas.
The group, for very long kilometers led by Gebreigzhabier from Lidl-Trek and Kruijswijk from Visma Lease a Bike, always kept the day's breakaway under control to not miss the opportunity to contest the sprint victory.
The three were caught 40 km from the finish, right at the feeding zone and simultaneously with a crash at the back of the group involving, among others, Gaudu, Reinderink, Madouas, Maas and Bonneu with the French rider Gaudu forced to retire and appearing very painful in his right elbow.
Another crash 11.3 km from the finish, triggered by Groenewegen with Valgren and Azparren involved. The Danish rider Valgren was forced to retire with a possible collarbone fracture.
Tomorrow the third stage of Tirreno-Adriatico is scheduled, from Follonica to Colfiorito (239 km), the longest stage of this edition of the Race of the Two Seas.
