This is not the first and probably won't be the last peace they'll establish. Moser and Saronni, Saronni and Moser, a rivalry that over the years has become a tongue twister, a single name, a single surname, one great story. Today another chapter, on "Uno Mattina", to launch the second edition of the Italy Regions Cup, wanted by the Professional Cycling League of Roberto Pella in collaboration with the Italian Cycling Federation. Two exceptional testimonials, who before forming a team and "working" for the good of cycling, sealed yet another peace in the RAI studios.
Actually, it starts with some archival footage from the Giro d'Italia: Saronni dropping Moser, with commentary by legendary Adriano De Zan. Who was the strongest? they ask from the studio: "Both of us, and it depended on the terrain - responds the Trentino -: Beppe was more explosive, I was more of a road cyclist. He had characteristics that put me in difficulty". Beppe: "I agree, I fully agree with what Francesco says".
Moser slyly counters. "He sometimes acts mischievous and provocative like he did when we were racing. When we stopped racing, me before him because I'm a few years older (five, ed.), at a certain point he continued to make certain comments and I told him: 'look, we've stopped racing, let's try to live a quiet life', but he occasionally makes provocations that led me to tell him: I won't talk to you anymore!"
Beppe listens and responds: "The problem is that I always respond to his little provocations and since my character is such that I can't hold back, I respond provocatively. But since we're here, are we making this peace or not? ...", asks Beppe. And Moser: "Let's make it, let's make it, but I've never crossed the line and I prefer not to be friends with someone who doesn't respect me".
Beppe doesn't give up: "Let's do this, to avoid misunderstandings: Francesco won't say certain things anymore and won't needle me, and I won't respond to him". Moser closes it satisfied, with smiles and good intentions: "Okay, just don't cross the line. Think that the other day I made peace on stage in Trento even with Mauro Corona... I want to live a quiet life". Beppe, amused, can't help but add: "So you're making peace with everyone. You're a man of peace".
Then some past memories, from their cycling rivalry, of a innovative Saronni and a Moser who remembers Gino Bartali. "One day I told him: in your times you raced to eat, today you ride a bicycle to lose weight".
The conclusion is about the Italy Regions Cup, but that's another story, about to be written.
