The incident is not recent, Remco Evenepoel had kept it hidden, but now that the trial of the fraudulent postman has begun, even the name of the two-time Olympic champion has come to light.
And it confirms that Remco does not have good relations with the Post Office, given that last December he crashed during training against a postal van, suffering consequences that will keep him away from races until mid-April.
The facts: a postman from Anderlecht appeared in court before the criminal tribunal to answer charges of stealing several credit cards and PIN codes, which he had used to withdraw money to finance his gambling addiction.
Among the victims is also Remco Evenepoel, from whose card 9,000 euros were stolen. The investigation began when a woman from Schepdaal did not receive her new credit card by mail, but discovered that money had been withdrawn from her account. Surveillance camera footage showed the postman in question at an ATM: during a home search, the police found dozens of stolen cards, one of which belonged to a company of which Remco Evenepoel was a shareholder and was intended for the cyclist.
"In total, the defendant withdrew almost 19,500 euros with stolen cards," stated the Halle-Vilvoorde prosecutor's office: "he used the money to finance his gambling addiction. Then he would discard the cards he had used or return them to the rightful owner."
The Prosecutor's Office has requested an 18-month prison sentence for the postman, most of which will be suspended: the verdict will be pronounced on February 27.
