ALL OF EVENEPOEL'S FALLS: EACH TIME HE CAME BACK STRONGER

Remco Evenepoel is 24 years old, but in his few years of cycling he has collected numerous successes and significant injuries. The latest happened yesterday, while the two-time Olympic champion was training before his retreat in Spain. The Belgian crashed into an open postal vehicle door, suffering a fracture of a rib, his hand and right shoulder blade, and a lung contusion. Last night there was the first intervention to reduce the clavicle dislocation and then he will return home. For Remco Evenepoel, this is another setback, but the team is confident and convinced that he will get up again and return to cycling soon.
Evenepoel has already experienced enough significant falls, so many that they could be enough for an entire career. It was August 15, 2020 when he fell during the descent of Colma di Sormano at the Giro di Lombardia. He fell into a ravine about eight meters deep and for several minutes there was no contact with him, until the rescue arrived, who descended into the cliff where Evenepoel had fallen.
The hospital verdict was serious, with pelvic and pubic bone fractures, but at the same time Evenepoel realized he had been miraculous, because he could have suffered significant neurological damage. He followed a long rehabilitation with ups and downs and only after 9 months was he able to return to racing at the Giro d'Italia. The pink race, however, does not bring him luck and so in his first experience, on May 26, 2021 in the seventeenth stage he ends up on the ground and is also hit by Mikel Nieve coming from behind. Remco crossed the finish line, but bruises and abrasions lead him to abandon the pink race. It's a defeat in Italy for the Belgian, but he is young and knows he can make up for it. Anyway, he is forced to another stop and only after a couple of weeks will he be able to get back in the saddle.
He also ends up on the ground at the Vuelta a España. It's September 1st, 2022 when he falls while taking a tight curve. He did not retire, but the aftermath of the fall was felt and on the uphill finish he was forced to slow down. Fortunately, he managed to recover the situation and he will arrive in Madrid with the red jersey. The following year in Spain there is another fall. This time at the finish of the third stage he collides with a woman from the public. The scenes are gruesome and Evenepoel appears with a bloodied face. He will not win the Vuelta but will manage to continue his race with stage victories and the best climber's jersey.
2024 sees him again protagonist of significant falls. This time at the Tour of the Basque Country he ends up on the ground with Vingegaard, Vine and Roglic. The incident occurs downhill in the fourth stage of the Basque race and on the Belgian's report it is written: broken clavicle and shoulder blade, with consequent farewell to the Spring Classics. So no Amstel Gold Race, no Flèche Wallonne and no chase for the third consecutive victory at Liège-Bastogne-Liège.
He will be forced to stop for two months, but misfortune is not over yet: at the Critérium du Dauphiné, he falls to the ground again. It's June 6th this year and in the fifth stage of the Dauphiné a slide put almost the entire group on the ground, including leader Remco Evenepoel. The damage to the Belgian, who wears the yellow jersey, is not serious, but the Flemish begins to reflect and thinks about how cycling is a truly dangerous sport. Remco remained seated on the grass in shock for several minutes and then, with pain and abrasions, managed to restart. The psychological aspect in a fall is important and Evenepoel has often had to deal with his not-easy character and in moments of stop, the desire to return to racing has often compromised the recovery work.
Remco fell again yesterday and will have to deal with rehabilitation and a slowdown in his preparation. However, the Belgian is a determined rider and, even if there are no statements from him at the moment, everyone is convinced that he will get up again and will return to racing with the desire to do well and quickly find the best results.
