Spring begins, temperatures warm up, days get longer, and the desire and opportunities to pedal grow. The BGY Airport Granfondo is drawing closer and remains an unmissable appointment in the spring for many cycling enthusiasts.
The cycling event, scheduled for Sunday, May 4th, 2025 in Bergamo, under the auspices of the Italian Cycling Federation, confirms the three traditional routes this year.
After experiencing the eve of the event with race number and package distribution and the Expo Village, hosted at the Santini Cycling headquarters, the start of the event will always be from Via Marzabotto, in the heart of Bergamo city, and participants will be able to decide even during the event whether to opt for the short, medium, or long route, all enjoyable and very scenic, capable of highlighting the beauties of the Orobie territory.
The three routes are suitable for every type of cyclist and different fitness levels: ranging from the short 89.4 km route (1,400 m elevation gain), through the medium 128.8 km route (2,100 m elevation gain), up to the long 162.1 km route (3,050 m elevation gain). 6 Valleys will be crossed (Val Cavallina, Valseriana, Val Serina, Val Brembana, Val Taleggio, Valle Imagna) and 37 Municipalities will be involved: after departing from Bergamo, the route will pass through Gorle, Scanzorosciate, Cenate Sotto, Cenate Sopra, Trescore Balneario, Entratico, Luzzana, Borgo di Terzo, Vigano San Martino, Casazza, Gaverina Terme, Albino, Nembro, Selvino, Rigosa di Algua, Costa di Serina, Bracca, Zogno, San Pellegrino Terme, San Giovanni Bianco, Taleggio, Vedeseta, Val Brembilla, Sedrina, Berbenno, San Omobono Terme, Costa Valle Imagna, Roncola, Bedulita, Capizzone, Strozza, Almenno San Salvatore, Villa d'Almè, Almè, Sorisole, Ponteranica and finally back to Bergamo.
The route is common to all until km 71, at the height of Ambria: after climbing the mythical Selvino ascent, the short route deviates to return to the finish line, while the medium and long routes continue towards Costa d'Olda and Forcella di Bura. After completing the descent to Brembilla (km 111), the intermediate distance turns towards the arrival, while the bravest who decide to tackle the long distance will still have two challenging climbs to face, reaching Forcella di Berbenno first and then Costa Valle Imagna, where the final downhill section will bring the caravan back to the Bergamo finish line.
The total climbing kilometers are about 23 for the shortest route, 33 for the medium route, and nearly 49 for the long route. For the GIM category, which allows any type of bicycle - muscular and electric, road, gravel, and MTB - to participate in the BGY Granfondo, a dedicated grid will be made available and only the short distance will be available. Along the route, there will be a total of 5 refreshment points, plus the finish line refreshment and the final pasta party, included in the registration.
