Biniam Girmay's last race day was on February 22nd at the Volta ao Algarve. The Eritrean left the race and quickly returned home because he was about to become a father for the second time. Family is a strong motivation for Girmay, and his important victories have come when he found the right balance between his Africa and the world of racing, often building his successes while pedaling on the roads near Asmara.
Saturday will see the Milan-San Remo, the first Monument Classic of the year, and for Bini this will be his fourth participation. His best result was in 2022, when he finished twelfth, then twenty-eighth in 2023 and twenty-seventh last year. The African champion has already written many pages of sporting history, but still dreams big and wants to be the first from his continent to win a Monument Classic. Girmay is still the guy who won Gand-Wevelgem in 2022, and three years after that victory, he now wants to write his name in one of the 5 most important races in the world. When Bini left Portugal to be present at the birth of his second daughter, he had said he would soon return to Europe and do so to win. Last Monday, the boy from Asmara left his country and landed in Malpensa, where he began to look at the Milan-San Remo route.
"During his absence from the group, he was able to do his things at home. When he's at home, it's like he's at a high-altitude training camp" – explained Maxime Segers, COO of Intermarché-Wanty -. "He trained well, did everything his coaches asked him to do, and his values are good. He returned to Europe and flew directly to Milan. This way, in the next few days, he can carefully examine the San Remo route".
Girmay and his Intermarché-Wanty last year achieved important results, such as the green jersey at the Tour de France and three stage wins, but in this 2025 they have not yet managed to win a race. Milan-San Remo could be the right opportunity to change things, even though winning a race like this is truly difficult.
"Bini is not a Pogačar, but he has already achieved some honorable placements at the start of this season and has already demonstrated several times that he can perform well immediately after a training period in his country" – continued Maxime Serges -. "On the Poggio he has arrived a bit behind in recent years, but in the descent he has always managed to rejoin the best group. We hope to see him break away with the best this time and thus be able to play his cards in the finale".
