On a day when Americans dominated Paris-Nice, Matteo Jorgenson was finally able to breathe a sigh of relief, securing his second consecutive victory in the French race. Despite the Dutch team attacking from the first stage and taking the overall lead, the race days were not easy due to bad weather and crashes, with Jonas Vingegaard forced to withdraw after falling in the fifth stage.
"This day is a true relief for me and means more than anything else - Jorgenson said - Now I've released a lot of accumulated stress and can breathe again". The race was not easy for the yellow-blacks. There was cold, rain, and even snow making the days extremely tough and dangerous, then came Vingegaard's crash, which put the team on alert. Although the Dane did not suffer any fractures, it was a highly stressful situation for everyone to manage. "I've thought only about this race in the last four months. It's nice to have finished it, knowing I did everything possible and my efforts were rewarded. It's crazy to say I've won Paris-Nice for the second consecutive year".
Paris-Nice was one of the main objectives for the American, who last year secured the final victory only on the last day. Jorgenson demonstrated his ability to manage stress and maintain clarity even in the most difficult moments.
"I'm glad people understood what I did mentally. Both yesterday and at La Loge des Gardes, I suffered greatly from the cold, for the first time in my career. Perhaps I've become too thin. Yesterday I was wearing ski gloves and had no sensation in my hands and feet. Certainly, it wasn't an easy week, as each day presented its challenges. I approached each day like a one-day race and I'm happy it's over. Now I can sleep for a week".
Jorgenson's victory was not by chance, and Visma-Lease a Bike did extraordinary work to bring the American to success. "I must thank all the guys. Losing Jonas was a disappointment for everyone, but I think we responded in the best possible way. My teammates always supported me, and we used our strengths to the fullest. Being able to say I've won Paris-Nice for the second consecutive year is truly unique".
