Australian Michael Storer heroically won the seventh stage of Paris-Nice, managing to withstand rain, snow, and cold. The Tudor Pro Cycling climber, after crossing the finish line, was visibly exhausted, trembling like a leaf during the award ceremony. Storer today broke away together with his teammate Julian Alaphilippe and it is precisely thanks to the French rider's effort that he managed to secure the victory. "Without Julian, I would not have been able to win" - Storer recounted after the finish line - "it doesn't happen every day to have a two-time world champion working for you".
The Australian from Tudor Pro Cycling broke away together with teammate Alaphilippe and 13 other riders. As they progressed, the gap quickly increased and on the Auron climb Storer made the difference and won alone in front of Mauro Schmidt (Jayco-AlUla) with a 20" advantage. The Tudor leader also gained in the general classification and is now fourth, 2'25" behind Matteo Jorgenson.
"Today I was really very motivated. I think Julian is a rider who truly feels the race. He knew there was a great opportunity with a good group. Without Julian, I would have had no chance of making it". For Tudor Pro Cycling, the race today was supposed to be for Alaphilippe, but when the Frenchman realized that Storer could make the difference and reach victory, he preferred to work for his teammate.
"The plan was for Julian to break away alone. I raced more by feeling and just followed. We weren't even supposed to follow the first attack and then look how it turned out. It's fantastic to win".
After the finish line, Storer and many other riders were truly exhausted, and the Australian hadn't even realized he had gained 9 positions in the general classification. "I just wish today hadn't been so cold. This is an incredible day and I will remember it for a long time. I didn't know I had gained so much in the leaders' classification, this is another good news added to an incredible day".
