Born in Udine on March 8, 1938, Pizzul was hired by RAI in 1969 and the following year commented on his first match (Juventus-Bologna, Italian Cup playoff). From the 1986 World Cup, he became the voice of national team matches and was the sports commentator for the Azzurri in five World Cups and four European Championships, retiring in August 2002 (Italy-Slovenia 0-1). In addition to sports commentary, he also hosted Domenica Sprint and then Domenica Sportiva. Sobriety was his trademark. In a recent interview, he had said: "Today's sports commentators are good, but they talk too much". Pizzul did not like heated tones in either commentary - even two-voice commentary, of which he was a pioneer - or in analysis.
From Football Fields to Sports Commentary
He loved football and had also practiced it with decent results, first in the parish team of Cormons, the Cormonese, then in Pro Gorizia, balancing study and sports activity. Becoming a professional footballer, he was signed by Catania in 1958. He also played for Ischia, Udinese and Sassari Torres, but his sports career ended early due to a knee injury. Graduated in law, he taught literary subjects in middle schools before being hired by RAI through a competition.
