Alejandro Valverde could soon become the new Technical Director of the Spanish National Team. The name of the Murcian champion would be one of the first on the list of candidates being evaluated by the newly elected president of the Royal Spanish Cycling Federation, José Vicioso, to replace the current selector Pascual Momparler.
Turning forty-five next April, El Imbatido (The Unbeatable) hung up his bike in 2022 after two decades of professional activity and 133 victories, including the 2018 World Championship in Innsbruck, four wins at Liège-Bastogne-Liège, five victories in the Flèche Wallonne, and twelve stages at the Vuelta a España.
After retiring from competitions, Valverde has remained connected to Team Movistar, collaborating with the team in various capacities. However, according to the Spanish sports newspaper As, his contract will end on December 31st, thus allowing Don Alejandro to pursue new professional paths.
The same Spanish newspaper reports that Pascual Momparler could continue his collaboration with the Spanish Federation in other roles, and that the decision on the new Technical Director will be made before Christmas.
