In 19 of the 21 stages of the 108th edition, scheduled from May 9th to June 1st, a specific kilometer of the route, marked with Red Bull branding, will be the "access gate" to the only intermediate sprint valid for the general classification: the first three riders passing the kilometer exit gate will earn bonus seconds of 6, 4, and 2 respectively. Since the Red Bull KM will represent the only intermediate phase of the race where bonuses are awarded for the general classification, in addition to the stage finish (where the winner gains 10 seconds), the passage will ignite a battle in the peloton.
The chase for bonuses will be crucial from the first stages in Albania, when the classification will be tight. The Red Bull KM, present in every stage, will enliven the battle for the lead until the grand finale in Rome. A few seconds can change everything, like in 1948, when the Giro was decided by a margin of just 11 seconds, and overturn predictions.
