For four years, the Scheldeprijs was the kingdom of Lorena Wiebas, but this year the Dutch rider left the throne by not showing up at the start, and so the new queen of the Belgian competition is Elisa Balsamo, who in the sprint beat Kool and Consonni
The first athletes to attack were the American Allison Mrugal (Cynisca Cycling) and the young Irish rider Amelia Tyler (Handsling Alba) who, breaking away a handful of kilometers from the start, animated the race for a long time. Pedaling by mutual agreement, they managed to accumulate a lead close to two minutes with which they presented themselves at the first passage point, while behind them the group was led by EF Education-Oatly, Team Picnic PostNL and Human Powered Health.
The action of the two brave riders of the day continued, and at the second passage on the cobblestone section of Broekstraat their advantage was 2'15" over the peloton, attentive but not at all intimidated by Mrugal and Tyler.
At the -27 kilometers sign, Femke Markus (Team SD Worx – Protime) "woke up" the group with an attack, and Zoe Bäckstedt (CANYON//SRAM zondacrypto) responded with a progression that created a selection, forming a group of counter-attackers who in the blink of an eye reached the escapees of the first hour.
While the bell indicated the start of the last lap, at the head of the Scheldeprijs were Femke Gerritse, Marie Schreiber, Julie De Wilde, Zoe Bäckstedt, Anna Henderson, Alicia González, Scarlett Souren, Allison Mrugal and Amelia Tyler, while the group, led by the sprinters' teams, was 15" behind.
At the last passage through the cobblestones of Broekstraat, the escapees had an 8" advantage over the group led by Team Picnic PostNL; on the asphalt, the peloton picked up speed and completed the chase 2 kilometers from the finish line.
