After covering Italy with signs inviting safe overtaking while maintaining a meter and a half distance, Io Rispetto il Ciclista has decided to focus on bike lanes. We had discussed this in a recent episode of BlaBlaBike with Maurizio Fondriest, the Trentino champion who founded this active association together with Marco Cavorso, Tommy's dad and safety manager of ACCPI, and ultracyclist Paola Gianotti.
After the presentation at Mugello of phase 2.0 of the project for the safety of anyone cycling on Italian roads, words were quickly followed by actions, and more than one administration has shown willingness to join the initiative. The first to respond is precisely "at home" of Fondriest: the Autonomous Province of Trento has already taken action, advancing concrete proposals presented in recent days at a meeting attended by the 1988 World Champion, Francesco Moser, Gilberto Simoni, and Antonella Bellutti.
President Maurizio Fugatti together with engineers Sergio Deromedis, head of road management service, and Raffaele De Col, director general of the Province, have identified bike paths to complete and roads suitable for hosting bike lanes.
"In total, there will be 30, and we will start with two experimental trials in Val di Cembra, precisely in a stretch where a cycling enthusiast lost his life after being rammed by a vehicle coming from behind, and in Fai della Paganella. I am happy that within two months we have already moved to action, I thank the administration and technicians for their quick intervention. We had a very constructive and realistic discussion that will soon bear fruit for all road users," comments Maurizio Fondriest to tuttobiciweb.it.
