If you haven't done so already, take note of Matthew Brennan's name because you'll be hearing a lot more about him. The nineteen-year-old British rider from Visma Lease a Bike won today's first stage of the Volta a Catalunya, the 178.6 km Sant Feliu de Guíxols - Sant Feliu de Guíxols, with an absolute masterpiece. During the descent leading to the finish line, Alpecin Deceuninck orchestrated a brilliant action, allowing another young talent, Tibor Del Grosso, to break away and attempt a finisseur's coup.
Brennan was the only one to understand and, most importantly, believe in the pursuit. He launched himself in chase of Del Grosso, closely marked by Kaden Groves, but despite this, he caught the Dutchman and won in a sprint, forcing the two Alpecin riders to settle for the places of honor.
For Brennan, this is his fourth seasonal success: in this early part of 2025, he has already won Le Tour des 100 Communes, the Grand Prix de la Ville de Lillers Souvenir Bruno Comini, and the Grand Prix de Denain - Porte du Hainaut
