The British rider Matthew Richardson - who just a few months ago chose this nationality, after competing in the Olympics with Australia - set the world record for 200 meters in speed, pedaling in 9.041 seconds at an extraordinary average of 79.637 km/h. The previous record belonged to Paul Nicholas from Trinidad and Tobago, who in 2019 in Cochabamba had recorded a time of 9.100 seconds.
Also broken was the Italian record of Fabio Del Medico, a very young Tuscan sprinter, who clocked a time of 9.618 seconds at an average of 74.860 km/h.
Great results also in the women's field with Chinese rider Liying Yuan becoming the first woman in the world to go under 10 seconds: she pedaled in 9.976 seconds at an average of 72.173 km/h, beating the record set by German Lea Friedrich in Paris last August with 10.029 seconds.
In this race, the Italian record was also broken by Miriam Vece, who improved her personal best with 10.486 seconds.
Both Richardson and Yuan went on to win their respective tournaments, and Miriam Vece performed well, finishing fourth, defeated in the small final by Dutch rider Hettie Van de Wouw.
