A feat from another era. Fredrik Dversnes outfoxes everyone after a 200-kilometer breakaway in the fifth stage of Tirreno-Adriatico, the Ascoli Piceno - Pergola 205 km route. Due to the usual inaction in crucial moments, the group of best riders had managed to close the gap, but no one attempted the decisive move to snatch victory from the Norwegian of Uno-X Mobility. A bittersweet finale for Filippo Ganna who responded to various attacks - thus confirming his good condition - but in the end had a chain problem that prevented him from sprinting.
THE RACE. Today's stage was characterized by a breakaway that started after a few kilometers, with Gal Glivar (Alpecin-Deceuninck), Xandro Meurisse (Alpecin-Deceuninck), Paul Ourselin (Cofidis), Dries De Bondt (Decathlon Ag2r La Mondiale Team), Francisco Muñoz (Team Polti VisitMalta), Fredrik Dversnes (Uno-X Mobility) and Manuele Tarozzi (VF Group Bardiani CSF - Faizane) setting the pace at the front. The seven gained a significant margin, with the group allowing up to 6'45" at mid-course. Bad news for Simone Consonni, the Lidl-Trek rider was forced to withdraw after a crash together with Jonathan Milan in the third stage of the race.
From 80 km onwards, the main group organized to absorb the breakaway, and the gap was halved as the kilometers passed: 20 km from the finish, Chris Hamilton (Team Picnic PostNL) and Nicolas Prodhomme (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale Team) increased the pace, and after the Monterolo climb, only Dversnes maintained his margin. Some sparks among the general classification riders, with Quintana and Chaves testing their legs for tomorrow's stage. Ayuso tried to surprise Filippo Ganna, but the Italian from Ineos responded. Pidcock and Van der Poel tried to catch the Norwegian to win the stage, but their lack of collaboration paved the way for Dversnes. Good fourth place for Giulio Ciccone, who arrived with the best.
About a minute behind for Ganna due to the chain slip, but thanks to time neutralization, the time trial specialist remained at the top of the general classification: 22" advantage over Ayuso, 29" margin over Tiberi. Tomorrow is a decisive day for the overall, with the sixth and penultimate stage, Cartoceto - Frontignano (Ussita) of 163 kilometers.
