There is great anticipation for the fifth stage of Tirreno-Adriatico, the Ascoli Piceno-Pergola of 205 km. One single fact explains why: the stage appears very undulating and dotted with more or less challenging climbs. At least nine can be counted, and some are categorized as Mountain Grand Prix (GPM).

From Ascoli Piceno, the route climbs to Croce di Casale and then passes through Amandola, Sarnano, and Tolentino. The race, always heading North, crosses the slopes of Monte San Vicino and enters the tough final part. After Castelleone di Suasa, it passes through the town of Pergola for the first time (not crossing the finish line) and climbs the Barbanti and Monterolo ascents with long steep sections and challenging descents. The final circuit designed by the friends of Polisportiva Omicioli from Saltara, led by Alighiero Omicioli, is truly very difficult, with 3,400 meters of total elevation gain to overcome. After Monterolo, the route quickly heads towards the center of Pergola and then to the finish line, with the last kilometer slightly uphill.
