Elisa Longo Borghini did not win in Siena today as she would have wanted: the rider from Piedmont was visibly exhausted when she crossed the finish line, and making it to the end of the race was truly difficult for her.
"I felt like in Paris, but I couldn't understand what was happening - said Longo Borghini after the finish line - honestly, I couldn't eat anymore, couldn't drink anymore, and I still don't feel well at all".
When 50 km were left to the finish, the Italian champion began to feel unwell, and nausea with vomiting tormented her until the end of the race.
"I had serious stomach problems and started vomiting and feeling sick. It was extremely difficult for me to continue today".
The Italian rider crossed the finish line escorted by her teammates, and as she entered Piazza del Campo, the crowd thanked her by shouting her name. "How important was the support of my teammates? It was truly important since I found myself alone 20 km from the finish. When I met them, fortunately they gave me the support to reach the top of Santa Caterina and then Piazza del Campo. It was a difficult day".
