Thirteen stages. The first from March 14 to 16 in Lastra a Signa, Tuscany: La Lastrense. The last from October 24 to 26 in Ravenna: La Divina. The northernmost on June 21 and 22 in Cittadella, Veneto: La via dei carraresi. The most central from September 19 to 21 in Foligno, Umbria: La Francescana. The southernmost on May 17 and 18 in Marina di Ragusa, Sicily: La Barocca. The most "foreign" on June 14 and 15 in San Marino: La Titanica. Two compete for the most wine-focused event: March 22 and 23 in Novi di Modena, Emilia, with La Lambrustorica, and from August 22 to 24 in Marlia, Tuscany, with La Vinaria. And more: May 3 and 4 in Castagneto Carducci, Tuscany, with the 99 Curves; from May 30 to June 1 in Follonica, Tuscany, with La Leopoldina; from June 27 to 29 in Castellania Coppi, Piedmont, with La Mitica; August 30 and 31 in Lugo, Romagna, with Girodellaromagna; and September 13 and 14 in Monticelli Terme, Emilia, with La Polverosa.
This is the Vintage Giro d'Italia. With the charm of wool and cotton clothing, the seduction of steel frames and pre-1987 components, the fashion of handlebar mustaches and the sparkle of aluminum water bottles, with motorcycle or welder's goggles and the smile of someone celebrating the last day of school, here are the vintage cyclists. They are not nostalgia sufferers, but people who – as president Michela Moretti Girardengo and vice-president Gioia Bartali (not lucky namesakes of Costante and Gino, but actual descendants of their great-grandfather and grandfather) claim – have "wheels in the dust and eyes on the future".
Younger siblings of L'Eroica in age, fame, and quantity, but not in enthusiasm, the thirteen vintage cycling events have united in a Giro to declare their slow pedaling style (no rankings exist, except sometimes for younger or older participants), conscious and responsible (regarding safety), touristic (but cultural, educated, and intelligent), affectionate and respectful (in short, social and sociable). Good excuses and happy occasions to tour Italy, sit at the table as well as on the saddle, thank the world and life.
Each vintage cycling event has its irreplaceable characteristic in landscapes and routes, side initiatives, shows, and offerings. To learn more: https://www.giroditaliadepoca.it
