KRISTOFF FROM ALULA TOUR: "MY SEASONAL GOAL IS 100 PRO VICTORIES"
PROFESSIONALS | 28/01/2025 | 18:15 di Federico Guido To start his sixteenth professional season, Alexander Kristoff has chosen an unfamiliar race, the AlUla Tour, a stage race whose mild climate, wind-swept routes, and various sprinter finishes align perfectly with the characteristics of the Norwegian veteran, more determined than ever this year to reach a significant milestone: 100 professional victories. We talked today with the Stavanger native, before the start of the inaugural stage from Al Manshiyah, about goals, the Saudi race, winter preparation, and how increasingly difficult it is for elite athletes to be away from their families. Alexander, it's your first time at the AlUla Tour: what do you expect from the race and what has impressed you most about this place? "The nature here is stunning, and I've already seen the race on TV. It seems like a classic race in these areas, with steep climbs and crosswinds like the ones I saw in the last edition. The latter is usually something I can manage, while the steep climbs will be too hard for me. But we have a good team to handle this terrain as well. I hope to do some good sprints to start, even though I caught a bit of a cold during the trip, so we'll see." How was the winter? "Good. In January, I went to a team training camp, while I spent December at home and managed to train quite well. In terms of form, I think I'm where I should be at this time of year. The classics? I hope to do a bit better than the last two years and, above all, not get sick as happened during this period in the last two seasons. So I hope to stay healthy and then, yes, to get better results, even though my main goal remains to get four victories this year to reach 100 professional successes. It doesn't matter if these come in the classics or other races; in fact, if I could start here, that would be great." From your perspective, which young riders from your team can we expect to make a breakthrough this 2025? "We have a lot of promising riders. It's difficult to understand who will make a quality leap, but I've seen that the guy next to me, Dversnes, is training well, so maybe he can start to get some good results." One of the greatest Norwegian athletes of all time, and I'm talking about Johannes Thingnes Bø, has announced he will retire at the end of the season to be with his family: how complicated is it to be away from family during the year while trying to be a professional athlete? "It's difficult. I have four children, and there's a lot to do at home where my wife is doing an extraordinary job. So I can understand why he's stopping because with children, it's not easy to be at home or traveling around the world. His decision is understandable. He has had a great career and can be proud of it."
