Vincenzo Nibali has stepped off the bike, but for the cycling world, he remains a great champion, with a critical eye on the routes that animate the grand tours. The Sicilian has won the pink race twice, and every time he looks at the images of his victories, the emotion is immense.
"The Giro is emotion, it's a spectacle that I was fortunate to experience as an athlete, and therefore it's difficult to explain". The Shark has carefully looked at the presentation and is convinced that the battle will continue. "I like the route, and even if we don't precisely know the names of the great riders who will animate the race, we will certainly have an extraordinary show because the Giro gives nothing to anyone. It will be nice to see who the men are that will fight for victory". There will be stages for sprinters and climbers, and the climbs, as always, will play an important role.
"The seventh stage will be important with the riders being nervous. The Tagliacozzo climb will have the last 3 km where it will not be possible to hide. Whoever wins here could be an important man for the final classification. But already the start from Albania will provide many emotions".
Following this, there will also be a time trial from Lucca to Pisa, and in recent years, we have seen that those who win in time trials are then the men who win the general classification. "The time trial is also very interesting and there will be gaps that could change the classification. Then among the important stages in the third week, there is the sixteenth stage. On that day, the riders will already have to understand how they are feeling because it will be difficult to manage even with the team because you must have the maximum number of men possible with you. You can have riders who could explode the stage. I don't know the San Valentino climb, but it is certainly very challenging".
For Nibali, the Giro is unique, and among the three grand tours, it is the most difficult not only to win but also to strategically interpret. "The characteristic of the Giro is that every stage hides some pitfalls. The route of the pink race leads to having narrow gaps. You must live day by day and see what happens each time". As always, the last days will make the difference, and the penultimate stage could be decisive.
"Stage 20 will be the grand finale where the last battle will be played. We could see two stages in one, with the breakaway and then the classification men confronting each other in the last duel. The Colle delle Finestre is a climb that consumes you because there is gravel and the bike does not flow, and then Sestriere must never be underestimated: it will be nice to see how the teams will organize themselves and where the riders will decide to attack".
