Leaving aside for the moment any possible in-depth analysis of the latest complex and convoluted revision of the highway code, recently approved by Parliament, I want to express my personal participation in the satisfaction and merit of Marco Cavorso and ACCPI (Italian Professional Cyclists Association) proposers and together protagonists of the one-and-a-half-meter distance to be observed when overtaking cyclists.

This norm, which has become law, suffers from a certain skepticism of effectiveness due to the "where road conditions permit" clause that the legislator wanted to specify in the new art. 148, however, in my opinion, no one can escape the honest thought that somewhere we had to start and that a law, however initially fragile, is always an inescapable act that gives strength to all possible actions so that little by little this principle finds sediment in the culture of those who drive vehicles on the road.

And if this were not enough, is there perhaps something else that the FCI and the world of cycling have obtained from this update of the Highway Code?

A hug therefore to Marco Cavorso for his extraordinary commitment, born from the incurable wound of having lost his son Tommaso in 2010 while training on the roads of Tuscany with his companions.

And a thank you to ACCPI which, protagonist of this and other initiatives for cyclist safety, was awarded the Safety Award on the occasion of the 28th edition of the Escort Day, held in Faenza on November 24, 2019. A day, for us of the G.S. Escort Projects, among the most significant.

Over time, too many cyclists have lost their lives on the roads of our country, many of whom were pushed by ourselves to pedal in the name of sport and sporting passion.

The "one and a half meters" can also be a tribute to their memory, with the burden of pain of their loved ones and the efforts that many of them have and are making so that it never happens again.

For this reason, this 1.5 m measure, which sounds so much like a technical rule, I would like that at least in the context of sports cycling, from today we would take the habit of calling it more meaningfully the "Tommaso distance".
