Grischa Niermann, one of the most important voices at Visma-Lease a Bike, is confident about Jonas Vingegaard's future and believes that the Dane could return to racing before the Critérium du Dauphiné.
According to Niermann, Vingegaard has perfectly recovered, even though he decided to skip the Volta a Catalunya, which is now a closed chapter. Visma-Lease a Bike is looking to the future, and the concussion suffered during Paris-Nice is now in the past, with the Dane having fully recovered.
At this point, the team is considering various hypotheses, and among these could be the possibility of participating in some small stage races before the Dauphiné. "We would have liked to have Jonas at the start of the Volta a Catalunya, but it wasn't possible," Niermann explained. "Things are definitely moving in the right direction for him, and we are evaluating what he can do and if we can include an extra race, but everything will depend on how Jonas feels physically."
Naturally, the Tour de France is the team's main objective: consequently, if Visma-Lease a Bike decides to add a race, it should be functional to the preparation for the Grand Boucle.
"We don't have enough riders in our team to suddenly add a new stage race to our program. But obviously, there are options we will consider if Jonas needs to do an extra race, but everything must be in function of the Tour, that's the most important thing for us."
Vingegaard is a unique champion and when he participates in a race, he always does so with the intent of achieving the highest result, which is why it wouldn't be easy to insert a new competition.
"It's always exciting when Jonas participates in a race. Normally, when he decides to participate, it means he feels strong enough to race for victory. And what we want is to win races. On the other hand, Jonas is our main leader for the summer Tour de France and perhaps he will race the Vuelta a España. So you have to establish priorities, and if he does an extra race, it must contribute to the Tour."
Vingegaard will certainly not return to the Tour of the Basque Country, because this race is emotionally too difficult for the Dane, who exactly one year ago during this race fell, putting his Tour participation at risk. Therefore, participation in the Tour de Romandie or a Walloon Classic could be considered. "We are evaluating various options. But we will not send Jonas to a race if he is not perfectly in shape."
