Make way for women! Sports politics is becoming increasingly pink: after the coronation of Kirsty Coventry as head of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) last Friday, today we are witnessing the first female president in cycling.
The Spanish Professional Cyclists Association (ACP) has announced that Isabel Martín Martín has been elected as the new president of the Iberian riders' association. The 25-year-old from Valladolid is still active, unlike the leadership of other national associations within the CPA, the global riders' union, and is currently racing for the Portuguese team Matos Mobility Flexaco IHS.
"With this appointment, the ACP begins a new phase under the guidance of a cyclist who personally knows the needs and challenges of the professional group" states the ACP in a press release, reaffirming its "willingness to collaborate with teams, organizers, federations, and all institutions involved in cycling to further improve the conditions of professionals". Additionally, the ACP expresses its recognition of the previous board for its dedication.
"It is an honor to take on this responsibility and work in defense of my colleagues. At ACP, we will continue to fight for safety, workers' rights, and the development of cycling in all its facets" added Isabel Martín, who has already been active in previous seasons as a CPA Women representative for implementing protocols on extreme weather conditions and race safety issues.
After defending the colors of Bizkaia Durango (2019), Massi - Tactic Women Team (2020), Rio Miera - Cantabria Deporte (2021-22), and Eneicat - CMTeam (2023-24), she will now be engaged in a dual activity, on and off the bike, for the benefit of her fellow riders.
