The participants have been announced who will battle from tomorrow until Sunday, March 16th in the 60th Tirreno Adriatico Crédit Agricole. The Race of the Two Seas will once again feature a world-class lineup with number 1 bib Mathieu Van der Poel, winner of three stages and who at the start of this road season has already won the GP Le Samyn. The list of main stage hunters includes Filippo Ganna (3 victories), Jonathan Milan (2 victories), Biniam Girmay, Thomas Pidcock, Olav Kooij, Dylan Groenewegen, Pascal Ackermann, Ben Healy, Marc Hirschi, Magnus Cort Nielsen, and Paul Magnier. Many are the contenders for the Trident of Neptune with Juan Ayuso and Jai Hindley, second and third classified in 2024 respectively, leading the list of favorites that includes Adam Yates, Richard Carapaz, Mikel Landa, David Gaudu, Antonio Tiberi, Giulio Ciccone, Pello Bilbao, and Derek Gee. Among the former winners, we'll see Nairo Quintana (2015, 2017), Michal Kwiatkowski (2018), and Simon Yates (2020), with the latter making his debut with Team Visma | Lease a Bike.
THE VOICES. Tirreno Adriatico Crédit Agricole saw six top riders speak at today's press conference. Here are their statements on the eve of the opening stage.
Mathieu Van der Poel: "I've felt good in training, now I just want to race. I need to find my race rhythm to reach my best level. A stage race like Tirreno Adriatico is ideal ahead of the classics. Without Philipsen, I'll have more opportunities to race my own race, and my goal will be to take home a stage".
Juan Ayuso: "I consider myself a climber and I've done specific work thinking about my big goal, which is the Giro d'Italia. However, I don't think I've dropped in time trial level. Last year's victory in the first stage was an incredible result. Repeating will be difficult, but I believe I have good chances and I'll give my all. I don't see myself as the main favorite of the race. I definitely want to win, just like Adam Yates, but we're aware there will be strong competition".
Jonathan Milan: "It's difficult to make comparisons between different seasons. Last year I was very strong but not at the top, just as I'm not at the top this year. I'll try to improve my condition day by day. The time trial isn't very long, I'll try to do well even though I'll have to deal with high-level rivals like Ganna and Ayuso".
Thomas Pidcock: "I still feel the fatigue from Strade Bianche, but I'm motivated. Tirreno Adriatico offers several chances ahead of Milan-Sanremo. Tomorrow I'll try to do my best but I'm not expecting any miracles. It will be a spectacular week".
Filippo Ganna: "Tirreno Adriatico is one of my favorite races. I always suffer a lot because of the course layout, but in the end it gives me excellent condition. This is the tenth time I'm at the start, I can say I'm getting older... Tomorrow I want to do well, I've trained specifically for the time trial so I hope everything goes smoothly".
Jai Hindley: "This is a race I really like, I always return willingly. The courses are tough and my legs always turn much better towards the end. I'm happy to be at the start again and I think I can fight for the Blue Jersey. Probably the penultimate stage will be the decisive one in terms of the general classification".
