O Cebreiro is one of the fundamental stages of the Camino de Santiago, but today, here, another journey - that of Sergio Chumil - could have lived a key stage. The Guatemalan champion, in fact, in the most feared stage of the O Gran Camiño 2025, left everyone behind, conquering a success that, in addition to putting him on the map, could soon give him another dimension.
"I believe this is the most important victory of my professional cycling career, and I want to thank my team for this," admitted the Burgos Burpellet BH rider before telling the journalists present on site how the stage went.
"It was a pretty tough stage. The first part I somewhat knew, while the second part I did not. It was very fast from the beginning, everyone wanted to try to get into the breakaway, but until kilometer 60 it didn't manage to break away. Then the pace remained fierce. On the climb, I stayed on the wheel of my teammate Eric Fagundez, who was better placed in the general classification, to help him. When Gee took the lead, I managed to stay with him, but obviously it wasn't convenient to collaborate. He was pulling for the yellow jersey, my objective was the stage. It wasn't easy at all to beat him in the sprint, but I just managed to do it," an enthusiastic Chumil declared.
"The finale was crazy. What went through my mind before knowing I had won? The truth is, I was waiting to be told if I had made it or not. I didn't think anything until they told me the result, and at that moment I felt enormous happiness for myself and the entire team. I think we worked and prepared very well to be in the best conditions here at O Gran Camiño," concluded the Guatemalan national champion, a rider who from today will certainly receive much more attention.
