In Karongi, during the fifth stage of the Tour du Rwanda, French rider Joris Delbove, 24, from TotalEnergies, celebrates a double victory by conquering both the stage and the leader's jersey, previously worn by his teammate Doubey. The sprint for second place goes to Australian multi-winner Gilmore (Israel Premier Tech), with Eritrean Mulubrhan taking third.
THE RACE. The day's breakaway started early, driven by Rwandan riders who were joined by two other athletes, a South African (Matthews) and a Ugandan, Lawrence Lorot. Also in the group were the combative Munyaneza and Mike Uwiduhaye (Rwanda national team), Nsengiyumva (Java Inovotech) and Nzafashwanayo (WCC UCI).
The six riders accumulated a 4'20" lead at the first Category 1 mountain point of a stage set in the highlands, with passages at 2,200 meters: rural schools lined up without exception, as every day. The road, wide and with a perfect surface, alternates views of Lake Kivu and tea-covered terraces.
