An outstanding day at the O Gran Camiño for Filippo Turconi. Long part of the six-rider breakaway that animated the opening stage, the young VF Group-Bardiani CSF-Faizanè rider concluded the stage by climbing the podium to wear the white jersey for best young rider, a more than satisfactory result for the 2005 class rider in what is already his seventh competition in Spanish territory.
"Today I went in the breakaway with the goal of trying to take the mountain jersey. Then, finding myself there, I also took the intermediate sprint where I gained 6 seconds of bonus that allowed me, once caught by the peloton and finishing the stage in the group, to take the white jersey. Tomorrow I'll be very happy to show it off," explained the rider from Varese after the awards ceremony, who lined up at the start of O Gran Camiño with a very clear idea in mind.
"Personally in this race I want to understand my level and my form by comparing myself with the great athletes who are here. Being very young, I've never had the opportunity to test myself in this way, but I'm very happy to be able to do so now. I don't have great ambitions: I want to see how I'm doing to also understand what I might do in upcoming races. Season goals? Try to win a race, help the team, and maybe manage to wear the national jersey," Turconi continued before briefly recounting the path that brought him to Portugal and what awaits him after the conclusion of the Galician race on Sunday.
"This year I've spent a lot of time in Spain. Thanks to team training camps, I've spent almost 6 weeks between December, January, and February and have already done 6 races before this one. This, in my opinion, has allowed me to arrive at O Gran Camino with a good pedaling stroke. When will you see me in Italy? Probably when the under-23 races start. Meanwhile, after this race, I'll race next weekend in Belgium and then go to Croatia."
