Valtellina confirms itself as a protagonist of great cycling with a calendar of internationally significant events. During the press conference held in Sondrio, at the Provincial Council Hall, the following were presented: the Giro d'Italia stage with finish in Bormio, the Giro-E candidacy with start from Tirano and finish in Bormio, the Giro d'Italia stage starting from Morbegno, and the finish of Giro d'Italia Women in Aprica. These events launch the countdown to the Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, consolidating Valtellina as a reference point for outdoor sports and tourism.

2025 will be an extraordinary year for the territory, with an unprecedented institutional commitment. In addition to the Giro d'Italia and Giro Women, the Tour de Suisse will also be hosted in Valchiavenna, in a crucial year just months before the Milano-Cortina Olympics.

Valtellina stands out as a cycling tourism center, with a bicycle-related tourist offering now comparable to that of skiing. A territory that offers a unique experience for both cycling enthusiasts and winter sports lovers.

Mauro Vegni, Giro d'Italia Director, commented on the men's Giro stages: "Valtellina has always been fundamental for the general classification and the conquest of the pink jersey. The Giro is a popular festival capable of attracting millions of people on the roads and on television. A unique promotional moment that renews itself every year. The specific stage (San Michele All'Adige – Bormio) includes the Tonale climb, the iconic Mortirolo, the Motte, and then Bormio. Unfortunately, we won't do the Stelvio, which is celebrating 200 years of history, but in recent years the snow uncertainty has penalized us too much. The start from Morbegno, on the other hand, was talked about last time due to the riders' strike, this time we hope for good weather."

Here is the statement by Giusi Virelli, Giro Women Project Manager: "The Aprica stage comes after a time trial. It will be a short stage and therefore full of pitfalls. The stage comes very early in the Giro Women's economy, but it could be very dangerous. Among the women, we might also have Monica Trinca Colonel, 4th at the recent UAE Tour and a representative of this territory."

Also present was Ivan Basso, two-time Giro winner and now team manager at Polti - Visit Malta - Kometa: "Valtellina is producing excellent riders, and I see Davide Piganzoli and Alessio Martinelli leading a group of interesting young talents who are growing. In this territory, I won my Giri d'Italia because here are the mythical climbs. Italian cycling? The talents are there. However, we must find good managers capable of knowing how to wait for and value them."

Finally, these were the words of Davide Menegola, President of the Province of Sondrio: "I want to say thank you to the Prefect, Law Enforcement, Gigi Negri, and Mayors who work alongside us. The Valtellina and Giro/Major Events combination is important and allows us to develop the tourism supply chain, a fundamental sector for our territory".
