In 2013, Mathieu van der Poel won the World Road Championships among juniors, but this year no Dutch rider will be competing for the world title. For the Dutch Cycling Federation, the trip to Rwanda is too expensive, and therefore they have officially decided not to send the youngest categories.
This is a consequence of the Dutch Olympic Committee's (NOC) decision, which from 2025 has included road cycling among sports that must be self-sustaining and will consequently receive a smaller subsidy.
"We were informed about budget factors and strict investment requirements, we carefully evaluated all factors before making a choice," said the Dutch cycling association KNWU. "The way the U23 cycling landscape is organized, particularly the male sector, with development teams linked to WorldTour teams, has become an important factor in the decision-making process. For juniors, training still occurs largely through associations, and the competition calendar includes a large number of races mostly organized exclusively by national societies. We decided that this crucial phase of young cyclists' training should be guaranteed. We offer a fantastic program where young riders are stimulated in the best possible way to grow as riders and as a team."
The technical commissioner of Dutch young talents, Tom Veelers, was thanked for his services, but the country decided not to send any youth representation to Rwanda for the upcoming World Championship.
"At the moment, we simply do not have the resources to complete preparation with the quality we represent. So it's better to organize the program in a way that allows us to focus on things we can do optimally, such as the European Championship and the Nations Cup."
The Netherlands would have certainly performed well in Rwanda, and looking at the results achieved in this category, we can see that last year, bronze went to young Senna Remijn, born in 2006, who will race this year with the Alpecin Deceuninck development team. Among the young riders who will be missing in Rwanda is certainly Wouter Toussaint, and for technician Tom Veelers, his non-participation is somewhat of a defeat, as he would have bet on this rider's result. Unfortunately, the Netherlands is not the only nation withdrawing its youngest riders: Denmark has already withdrawn, and Belgium will likely do the same, not to mention that smaller nations risk skipping even the top category races.

La decisione del Comitato Olimpico Olandese non la condivido e spero che il Belgio non imiti l'Olanda. Il Rwanda ama il ciclismo, ha splendide colline e merita che la vetrina del Mondiale sia davvero sfruttata al meglio

Ma che garanzie sanitarie ci sono in caso di incidente? E malattie tropicali? Ha senso rischiare la salute di un campione per un giorno di corsa? Ogni cosa nei tempi e nei modi adeguati, a mio avviso.

Penso che all'UCI ci sia qualcosa che non funziona ... anzi più di qualcosa.
Nel 2026 dove lo fanno? In Afghanistan?
Nel 2027 in Siria? poi c'è il Burundi, l'Iran, l'Iraq ecc., la scelta è ampia.
