BENIDORM PHENOMENON: WORLD CUP RETURNS BUT THE DREAM IS THE 2029 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

After the success of cyclocross in Spain with two World Cup stages in 2023 and 2024, the next cyclocross World Cup stage in Benidorm has already sold out for next Sunday. Thanks to this success, Benidorm, a tourist center on the Costa Blanca, is thinking big and aims to host the World Championships in 2029.
The news has not yet been officially confirmed, but it seems that between the Spanish organization and the UCI, projects are already underway to realize the world event in 4 years.
The World Cup stage on the sandy and clay terrain of Benidorm has revolutionized the vision of this sport throughout the country, bringing tourism to the renowned Costa Blanca coastal area even in winter. The success of the World Cup is visible and has given rise to many side events that have enriched the tourist offering. There is then the issue of tourism related to Belgium, Netherlands, France, and Great Britain, nations that are accustomed to visiting the Spanish coast in winter months, with tourism reserved for the elderly.
But there is also sports tourism, linked to teams that choose this area, characterized by a mild climate, for long training periods. Thanks to the World Cup organized in Benidorm, many young tourists and sports-passionate families have discovered the winter beauties of the Spanish sea, with tourism that has increased significantly in the last two years. Organizing a world championship would attract even more media attention to the seaside resort, which is why Benidorm has sought to approach the UCI.
Talks between the two parties seem to be going well and sponsors could arrive soon, who would help organize the event, which costs significantly more than a World Cup stage. Although Benidorm is a seaside resort, the World Cup stages have never been held on the beach, but rather moved inland, even if the passage under the Mediterranean pines recalls a typical dune landscape. The world championship route, therefore, could be the same as the World Cup, namely a park a few steps from the city center.
The passion for cyclocross in Spain continues to grow, thanks also to Felipe Orts, the cross rider born on the outskirts of Valencia, who has become a true idol in his country: thanks to him, many young Spaniards have decided to dedicate themselves to cyclocross rather than road cycling. For the moment, negotiations are moving forward and everything would suggest an official candidacy to the UCI that could arrive as early as next weekend. Benidorm is a city that has already hosted a world event, but it was the Road World Championships, when on September 6, 1992, a brilliant Gianni Bugno managed to win on the long straight leading to the sea, overtaking in a sprint with about twenty riders, with Laurent Jalabert and Dmitrij Konysev forced to settle for second and third place.
