ALULA TOUR. 17 TEAMS COMPETE PEDALING IN A PARADISE OF HISTORY AND MODERNITY

PROFESSIONALS | 15/01/2025 | 11:25
The group prepares to make its return to Saudi Arabia, specifically in the AlUla region, to tackle from January 28 to February 1st the 2025 edition of the AlUla Tour. There will be 17 teams at the start, including 6 UCI WorldTeams, called to face 5 stages with varied profiles: Hegra, Maraya, the AlManshiyah railway station, the Tayma fortress, and the Camel Cup track are just some of the locations that will provide a majestic backdrop to the pedaling challenge.
Organized in collaboration with the Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU), the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Sport, the Saudi Cycling Federation, and the International Cycling Union (UCI), the AlUla Tour represents the continuously growing presence of Saudi Arabia on the global sports scene, while promoting sustainable sports development and showcasing the extraordinary culture and history of AlUla.
The first flag will drop in AlUla, in front of the AlManshiyah railway station, which will also host the finish of the first stage. Although there is nothing particularly challenging in the 142.7 kilometers of this opening stage, sprinters will need to pay attention to their positioning if they want to earn the right to wear the first leader's jersey. The following day, AlUla Old Town will welcome the riders departing for Bir Jaydah Mountain Wirkah, a new destination for the event.
The stage begins relatively calmly, but the finale promises to be explosive: riders will need to show endurance and audacity when climbing the Bir Jaydah Mountain Wirkah. With an average gradient of 9.2% and a maximum of 15%, the 2.9 km climb will be tackled 3 times in the last 50 km of this 157.7 km stage. The third segment between Hegra and the Tayma Fortress is a journey through the ancient beauty of AlUla.
A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008, Hegra is the most important preserved site of Nabataean civilization and features monumental tombs with decorated facades, dating mainly to the 1st century BC. At the end of the 180.6 kilometers of this stage, the AlUla Tour will offer cyclists the opportunity to discover the Tayma Fortress, an archaeological site that reveals treasures testifying to the region's activity hundreds of years ago. After this day rich in ancient culture, the Tour returns to the modernity of AlUla, with the start of the fourth and penultimate stage of the journey offering the breathtaking spectacle of Maraya - the world's largest mirrored building - reflecting AlUla's natural landscape.
But the riders will need to remain focused as they set out on a 140.9 km route that will take them to Skyviews of Harrat Uwayrid, a 4 km climb, with one kilometer at an average gradient of 17%. The general classification leader will need to be very vigilant on the morning of the final stage of this AlUla Tour 2025, with the final route promising to keep everyone breathless until the end. Traced in a loop around the Camel Cup track, the 169.6 km route will be battered by wind, particularly in the final section and on the track usually dedicated to camel races, a tradition deeply rooted in the cultural history of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Arab world. The risk of echelons will be on everyone's mind and could upset the standings.
