EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS ABRUZZO 2029, THE ORGANIZATIONAL CHALLENGE STARTS FROM AFAR
EVENTS | 03/01/2025 | 08:06 With almost five years to go, the European Cycling Union (UEC) is not wasting any time and is already working towards the European Road Championships that Abruzzo will host from September 11 to 16, 2029. After the official contract signing last January between the President of the Union Européenne de Cyclisme Enrico Della Casa, the President of Abruzzo Marco Marsilio, and the Regional Councilor for Budget and Sport Mario Quaglieri, the region has completed the administrative process and it is time to launch the organizational structure. "It is wise to move well in advance to create a highly performing team capable of guaranteeing Abruzzo an excellent result from every perspective," explains UEC President Della Casa. "The signed agreement assigns full responsibility for the organizational machine to the UEC, and this, as experience teaches us, means two things: supporting our structure with a team of professionals accustomed to events of this scale and with strong sector know-how, while at the same time valuing the skills and human resources we can find in the territory." Abruzzo is, after all, a land with great familiarity with cycling and equal passion. In 2025, there will be numerous events in the region: first a stage of Tirreno-Adriatico, then the Giro d'Abruzzo in four stages, and finally two stages of the Giro d'Italia (in 2023, Abruzzo also hosted the "grand start" of the pink race). "We are very satisfied to have obtained the European Cycling Championship for 2029; Abruzzo is increasingly a leader in organizing major events, and cycling continues to be an important means of tourist promotion to enhance our territory," explains Regional Sports Councilor Mario Quaglieri. The continental event – which over five days of racing will involve over 800 participants from almost 50 countries and award 14 titles for Junior, Under 23, and Elite male and female categories – will be broadcast throughout Europe thanks to the agreement between UEC and Eurovision. "The last road European Championship in Italy was in 2021 in Trento and marked a memorable success, generating a certified media value close to 50 million euros. Obviously, the goal is to set up an event of equal quality to the one hosted by Trentino; we know how challenging this is: that's why the team on the field must be up to the task," reflects President Della Casa. For Abruzzo, the 2029 European event is of great importance, considering that in this region too, active tourism has become a strategic asset, and thus showcasing the territory's beauty through a major cycling event is a strategy long strongly supported by the regional administration chaired by Marco Marsilio. Added to this is a profound meaning linked to an important commemoration, not only for Abruzzo: 2029 coincides with the twentieth anniversary of the earthquake that struck L'Aquila on April 6, 2009, causing 309 deaths and over 1,600 injuries. L'Aquila and its province, after significant reconstruction works still in progress, will be able to present themselves in all their renewed beauty in 2029, while carrying in everyone's heart the memory of a tragedy that will never be forgotten. "I want to thank UEC President Enrico Della Casa and FCI President Cordiano Dagnoni for choosing Abruzzo and the entire staff that, together with my department, has worked to make this international event possible," adds Councilor Quaglieri. "There could not have been a better way, twenty years after that tragic earthquake that devastated our capital, to honor the memory of innocent victims."
