The history of Italian cycling is rich with races that are no longer held but have made history: that's why we thought of proposing a new column that would pull them out of the memory drawer. The first edition dates back to 1955, the last one twenty years ago in 2004. With forty-eight editions, the Coppa Poggetto is counted among the historic classics of our amateur cycling. The race in Salsomaggiore Terme (Parma) owes its birth to the figure of Cav. Paride Zalaffi who conceived it in collaboration ten years after the end of the second world war. But it was under the name of Alfredo Isetti and his wife Luciana Copelli that the Coppa Poggetto became over the years a competition of great appeal for the best riders of that era. Alfredo, now a 93-year-old in perfect shape with an iron memory and father of Daniela Isetti, currently running for the presidency of the Italian Cycling Federation, with his company Camping Arizona, founded in 1974, initially chaired by Afro Copelli and then by Otello Bandini and Enea Pietra, played an important role in organizing the Emilian race, tracing a route for thirty-two editions under his direction.

The long list of winners was inaugurated by Gianfranco Beccanti in 1955. Racing for Bercetese, he pedaled to success on the Poggetto climb, arriving solo at the finish line after dropping everyone on the final climb of the Poggio.

Beccanti opened the way to the triumphs of Mori, Fusetti, Tinelli, Bandera, Accorsi, Alzani, Scandelli, Bodei, Muielli, Mantovani, Franzoni, Enrico Paolini, Giacomini, Varini and Rinaldi. From 1973, Alfredo Isetti, awarded the Gold Star by Coni, definitively launched Coppa Poggetto, bringing it to national levels. From there came the victories of Paolo Pè ahead of Pasquale Pugliese with Giambattista Baronchelli (then Iclas) in eleventh place, Claudio Guarnieri, Marcello Umbre and Gino Lori in 1976, who in the Termolan jersey prevailed over Danish rider Jorgen Marcussen and Paolo Pieroni. The 1977 edition introduced to the general public the rising star Mario Noris, from Bergamo's Ciclo Lombardo Framesi, who near the finish line caught and dropped Claudio Torelli from Siapa (4th), winning the race ahead of Giovanni Testolin (Bombana) and his teammate Pierangelo Zorzolo. The following year saw the solo victory of Mauro De Pellegrin from Giacobazzi, who won with a 10" margin over Orlando Maini and 1' over William Bianchini. With a great sprint, Marco Zanotti from Ceramiche Abetone signed the 1979 edition, burning Maurizio Rossi (Nicolò Biondo) and his teammate Maurizio Mandelli. Another notable name was Maurizio Piovani. The Isal Tessari athlete scored in 1980, preceding Enzo Serpelloni from Quarella by 32" and Enrico Monai from Velo Club Gottinghen. A few months later, Piovani became the Italian road champion in Nonantola. The Eighties were marked by Maurizio Bonizzato's double victory. As a good finisher, the then Bombana rider won in 1981, beating Giorgio Aiardi and Carlo Garattoni, and repeated his success the following year with 1'10" over his teammate Marco Scandiuzzi and Tullio Cortinovis (Novartiplast). From Bombana's triumphs to those of Passerini Gomme: Giuseppe Manenti and the late Emilio Ravasio gave strong emotions to the unforgettable Carletto Passerini in the 1983-1984 period. [... rest of the text continues in the same style ...] With the Isetti family, Coppa Poggetto celebrated thirty years of quality and love for a race that was always held on April 25th, Liberation Day. Initially promoted by the Cycling Society of Salsomaggiore Terme, it then passed through GS Parmense, Cral Giacomo Tomasini, and finally to GS Camping Arizona. Salsomaggiore Terme was the usual finish location, which only in the last editions changed to Tabiano Bagni.
